Champian Fulton announces 2012 US Southern tour

Pianist/Singer Champian Fulton ("The Breeze and I" 2011) announced "Feel The Heat" Southern US tour dates forthe month of January 2012.

Champianhas quickly become a favorite for jazz festivals includingthe Rochester International and Detroit Jazz festivals during 2011.

During the month of November (2011), Champian debuted with the WDR Big Bandof Cologne, Germany and looks forward to performing in the states of Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana.

Champian Fultonwill be performing with quartet members Stephen Fulton, Flügelhorn, Drummer Pete Zimmer andBassist, Hide Tanaka.

17 year old Tomer Bar of Tel Aviv (Israel) along with bassist Uri Kutner and Drummer Ofri Nehemya release their CD "Local Groove" today (January 3, 2012) on the Spectra Jazz label.

Tomer Bar Trio joins Spectra Jazz

17 year-old wunderkind Tomer Bar has joined the Spectra Jazz label for distribution of his fourth CD "Local Groove" in the United States and Canadian territories.
Tomer hails from Tel Aviv, Israel, and shows a versatility as vocalist (singing primarily in Hebrew) and prodigious pianist/composer for various genres that include Jazz, Classical, Popular and Country music. He has been featured twice at the Israeli Festival (2007, 2010), The Tel Aviv Festival (2009) and the Givataim Festival (2011).

The CD entitled "Local Groove" is his fourth and first to gain distribution outside of the Israeli region demonstrating a varied combination of melodies supported by contemporary, bop, Latin, and classical flavors.
The trio is completed by bassist, Uri Kutner (18) and drummer, Ofri Nehemya (18).

Digital release of "Local Groove" is scheduled for December 13, 2011.

Champian Fulton and the WDR Big Band Cologne perform in November

Spectra Jazz recording artist Champian Fulton is preparing for her debut run of performances with the legendary WDR (West Deutschland-German Radio) Big Band Cologne - November 14 through November 26th, 2011.
The invitation is a coveted honor and has been held by luminaries in the field of jazz including Carmen McCrae, Paquito D'Rivera, Kurt Elling, New York Voices and Patti Austin to name a few.

The award-winning big band got it's start in the mid 1940s and has since embraced a myriad of styles and arrangements while supporting some of the most renown musicians and performers in the world.

Prior to her dates in Cologne, Champian continues her schedule of performances in the New York Tri-state area where she performs regularly at Birdland, Smalls Jazz Club, The Garage Restaurant and Cleopatra's Needle of New York, as well as Novita's (Metuchen, NJ) and Casa Dante's of Jersey City, NJ.

As Fall 2011 approaches, the Spectra Jazz roster continues momentum of releases, dates and appearances that include every thing from national festivals to venues overseas.
In addition to the current activity, Spectra has announced a booking agency wing Arcadium Entertainment which will act exclusively on behalf of artists at the Spectra Music Group.

Here's a peek at what Spectra Jazz artists have lined up for the Fall.

Saxophonist Elan Trotman, the Billboard chart-topper with his hit "Heaven In Your Eyes" featuring Brian Simpson from the CD "Love & Sax" returns to Sculler's Jazz Club of Boston with the legendary Marlena Shaw on Oct. 7, followed by the JW Desert Ridge Jazz Festival in Phoenix, Arizona (Oct. 13). He then takes on the United Kingdom October 30 through November 13 with UK guitarist Peter White.

Singer Matt Cusson, who after a successful national tour which culminated with his relocation from Los Angeles to the Northeast, continues to please his fans by performing at the 6th Annual New Bedford Oktoberfest with singer-songwriter Rebecca Correia (Oct 1) and adds a show at the National Underground on Oct 7 in New York City (see MattCusson.com for changes and up-to-date listings).

Champian Fulton ("The Breeze and I" CD), who enjoyed successful debuts at Club Piscopo (Atlantic City), The Xerox Rochester International Jazz (Rochester, NY) and Detroit Jazz Festivals, in addition to a return engagement at the Litchfield Jazz Festival in Connecticut, continues dates through September at Kitano New York and looks forward to her first appearances with the WDR Big Band of Cologne, Germany November 14 through November 26th. Neo Soul/Jazz duo 3rd Scenario are creating a buzz with their bonus track "Make Me Wanna" from their album "It's About Time" and will be performing at the Blue Cafe (Long Beach, CA) Oct 14.

The Acid Jazz/Funk band Los Musicos de Jose play the Film Club Cafe in Naucalpan de Jaurez, Mexico on Oct 8 at 8pm, while Saxophonist Butch Thomas performs for Tampa Bay's Ybor City Jazz Fest with percussionist Gumbi Ortiz and the Tampa Bay Latin Jazz All-Stars on November 5th (Mainstage).

Last but not least, Funk bassist Charles "King C" Glenn who was one of the creators of the "Motown sound" during the reign of Rick James, Teena Marie and Debarge, is putting finishing touches on his latest release "The Best of The Best of Charles Glenn" (due late fall). The CD will feature new production from favorite compositions that most exemplify his style.
Speaking of which, catch a glimpse of Charles Glenn (aka "King C") onstage with his "Bad Azz Band" performing August 4, 2011 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Las Vegas, Nevada).

Not only was she guest instructor for the Litchfield Jazz Camp, but also won over the audience with her set on Saturday August 6th, 2011. Champian Fulton performs at new "Club Piscopo"

Champian Fulton is a very busy lady this summer, headlining for three Jazz Festivals (Rochester, Litchfield and Detroit), teaching at the Litchfield Jazz Camp, and now what she calls her "vacation date" performing alongside Actor/Performer and Saturday Night Live alumnus Joe Piscopo at his very own "Club Piscopo" at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. The performance club opened June 30,2011 and was a long time dream for the actor.

Piscopo, a regular on the NBC Television series Saturday Night Live (1980-84), and known for his impersonations of David Letterman and "The Chairman of The Board"(Frank Sinatra), created the venue with the idea of performing and showcasing "undiscovered" talent in an ambience that resembles the legendary Copacabana club of New York in it's heyday.

Saxophonist Elan Trotman debuted (June 1, 2011) on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart, coming in at #20 for sales and downloads of his CD "Love and Sax".

Singer-Songwriter Matt Cusson and Saxophonist Elan Trotman will join forces for performances at Washington D.C.'s Blues Alley Jazz and Supper Club on August 2, 2011 (8pm and 10pm).

Both are taking time away from their extensive tour schedules to mark the event at the established jazz club.

Soulful singer and pianist Matt Cusson who released a plush arrangement this past year of his award-winning composition "One Of Those Nights" (March 8, 2011), also released the duet entitled "Same Old Song" from his "Matt Cusson" CD - featuring Javier Colon of NBC Television's "The Voice".

Spectra Jazz Producer and Recording artist Matt Cusson releases his duet single "Same Old Song" today (April 29, 2011) which features Javier Colon of NBC Television's "The Voice".

Javier Colon (pronounced "Cologne") took the television audience by storm last Tuesday (April 26th and re-televised Wednesday, April 27th) as a contestant on the vocal competition program.

Spectra Jazz Recording artist Scott "Bugs" Allen (3rd Scenario), was music director this past weekend for the "Icons" tribute to Lena Horne, Josephine Baker and Eartha Kitt at the Silver Rose Awards and Auction in Beverly Hills, California.

The event benefits the Jenesse Center Inc. of Los Angeles, which provides intervention, shelter and support for families affected by domestic violence.

The awards and auction ceremony was hosted by actress and Jenesse Center Chairperson, Halle Berry.

Veteran funk master and bassist Charles "King C" Glenn (b. Charles Alexander Glenn Jr.) has signed an exclusive deal with Spectra Jazz. The Nashville native known for his slap bass funk style, created a definitive sound in the eighties with his group "Ozone". Singer-songwriter Matt Cusson, Pianist-singer Champian Fulton and Smooth Jazz Saxophonist, Elan Trotman initiate the Spectra Jazz first quarter with worldwide physical releases of their music at the label.
Matt Cusson, who has experienced a plethora of accolades for his autobiographical ballad "One of Those Nights" (2009 Maxell Song of The Year), will finally get to see the single released on its own merit (in addition to his debut album - "Matt Cusson"), while the critically acclaimed Champian Fulton and her CD ("The Breeze and I") will also receive its due with a worldwide release at retailers such as Barnes and Noble, HMV International and J&R Music World. Meteoric saxophonist Elan Trotman has joined the Spectra Jazz roster of trailblazers with his latest CD release
"Love and Sax".

With influences of Grover Washington Jr. and Arturo Tappin, the Barbadian native demonstrates a versatility of finely improvised performances supported by romanticized Smooth Jazz, R&B and hints of Urban Contemporary genres.

The album has already received notable reviews in the industry as a Smooth Jazz chart item with two highlighted selections; “Love and Sax” and the sensual “Midnight Serenade” featuring a special appearance by R&B Vocalist Tony Terry.

Najite receives Nigerian Promoters Award nomination

Spectra Jazz Inspirational Jazz guitarist Kelvin "Najite" Ikpeni has been nominated "Best Gospel Instrumentalist"for the 2011 Nigerian Promoters Association Awards.

The Nigerian Promoters Association U.S.A Inc. (NPA) is a non-profit organization formed in January of 2010 with headquarters in Houston, Texas and annexes in Washington D.C. and Atlanta, Georgia.

The NPA inc. executive council consists of various Nigerian promoters throughout the United States whose primary focus is to create acknowledgment for Nigerian performers based in the U.S. who are active in the arts and entertainment industry.

Najite's CD release "Genesis of Me" (August 2010) introduces his personal style "Neo-Life Groove" (an inspirational approach to the jazz genre) with sound comparisons to Earl Klugh, Jonathan Butler and George Benson.

In addition to Najite's passion for jazz, he completed biblical studies with The Chesapeake Bible College & Seminary and has performed with Gospel greats such as Donnie McClurkin and Marvin L. Winans.

Cusson's "One Of Those Nights" receives Oasis Award nomination

Singer-songwriter Matt Cusson has received a "Song of The Year" nomination from the Oasis Contemporary Jazz Award committee for his lauded composition "One Of Those Nights".

The original version (written and produced by Cusson), won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for "Best Jazz Song", and claimed the "Maxell -Song of the Year" (2009) - but never was given credit as a stand alone release.

Upon signing with the Spectra Jazz label, work began in summer of 2010 to remix and orchestrate the song with arranger Bill Meyers for a worldwide release.

One of Those Nights was released on November 9, 2010 and started a wave of support from fans and radio, spanning Europe, Canada, South America and the United States.

The maxi-single is slated for a Spectra Jazz release on March 8, 2011 and is currently on various digital outlets including Amazon, iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster and others.

Less than two weeks ago, an article about one of the largest internet jazz radio stations, JAZZRADIO.com was posted at All About Jazz.com in regards to their selection of artists for jazz programming.

JAZZRADIO Channel Manager, Devin states, "we are picky-very, VERY picky. Only about 5% of what we hear ends up getting aired...we want to play the cream of the cream of the crop for our listeners."

So it did us proud that Spectra Jazz Latin artists, Los Musicos de Jose and Guisando Caliente both received nods for inclusion for the best of the best at the station.

Dynamic duo 3rd Scenario signs with Spectra Jazz

With a jazz style that can be best described as Cool, Smooth and Funky, producer/performers, Scott "Bugs" Allen and Earl "Tee" Harris have signed with the Spectra Jazz label, bringing their musical duo entitled "3rd Scenario" to the roster of trail blazers.

Bassist/Trumpeter Scott Allen (aka "Bugs), a native of Baltimore, Maryland and Guitarist/Vocalist, Earl Harris, of Chicago, Illinois, forged a bond some 12 years ago at an audition for a group called "Back2Back", which they both considered to have been "Scene one".
After a second attempt they witnessed the close of "Scene Two".

Their present and last title "3rd Scenario" pays homage to both Harris being of third generation, and Allen, a third generation musician. The current project - "It's About Time" is driven with the mission to provide uncompromising musical excellence.

Together they raise the bar to include the best collaborations such as with producer Dapo Torimiro (John Legend, "Bayou Boogie" - Disney's "Princess and the Frog", Chrisette Michele, etc.) to become the next Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis of Funk, Jazz and Soul.

Fans of drummer Chris Massey were perplexed when they started showing up at retail outlets to purchase his "Nue Jazz Project - Vibrainium" to be told "it was back-ordered" or just plain "unavailable".
The album that was set to be released in stores Dec 7, 2010 was pushed back for what could only be explained as a "miscommunication from international distributors with retail".

Fulton nabs dates with the Cab Calloway Orchestra

Jazz pianist and singer, Champian Fulton has added a feature performance with the "Cab Calloway Orchestra" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin for their holiday performances at the Weill Center for the Performing Arts on December 18, 2010 for matinee (2pm) and evening (7:30pm) performances.

Cab Calloway was one of the most prolific vocalists and bandleaders in the 1930s and 1940s, who remained active until his death in 1994. Part of his legacy, The Cab Calloway Orchestra is now guided by his grandson C. "CB" Calloway Brooks.

This will be Ms. Fulton's first appearance with the legendary orchestra.

IAMA selects Matt Cusson as artist to watch

IAMA - The International Acoustic Music Awards, based in Fort Lauderdale, FL, has selected Matt Cusson as featured artist of the month (5 out of 5 stars), for his award winning ballad "One Of Those Nights".

The organization awards prizes in access of $11,000 for performing artists who show excellence in performing, songwriting, composition, production and originality.

The IAMA website duly notes that Cusson's "cleverly written lyrics, melody and variation placements, gives the listener something to look forward to". And, that "record labels should sign him up!". This obviously was something the committee may have decided a while back, because that's exactly what we did!

Cusson's "One of Those Nights" has been re-mastered, orchestrated and ready to hit the airwaves with a digital release date set for November 15, 2010.

Spectra Jazz releases Matt Cusson's "One Of Those Nights"

Spectra Jazz will release the maxi single “One of Those Nights” by singer/songwriter Matt Cusson on November 16, 2010. The autobiographical jazz ballad (unanimously voted as the winner of the 2008 “John Lennon Songwriting Contest” - followed by the 2009 “Maxell Song of the Year”, has been re-mixed and re-mastered to include orchestral embellishments, provided by composer/arranger Bill Meyers.

Matt Cusson headlines in "American Icon" series

Singer/songwriter Matt Cusson will be performing alongside Nita Whitaker (Singer/Former Miss Louisiana) and Jake Simpson (Oprah Winfrey Show) in Chris Isaacson and Shane Sheel's "Upright Cabaret"- American Icon series held at the Scherr Forum Theater at Thousand Oaks Civic Center on October 23, 2010.

Spectra Recording artist Robbie Dupree shared the spotlight yet again this past weekend with his long time admirer - late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon at a recent concert at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock.

Dupree is claiming a sense of resurgence, touring his 'feel good' music and having his hit "Steal Away"placed in two motion pictures this year ("MacGruber" and "I Love You Phillip Morris"). His latest album, "Time and Tide" is receiving raves for songs like "Lucky", "Mystery World" and "Blue Monday".

The well known information station on all things Jazz reports on Meeco's latest release, "Perfume e Caricias - Perfume and caresses". The album has a who's who of jazz artists (including James Moody, Kenny Barron, and Eddie Henderson.) with sensual vocals in Portuguese text by singer Eloisia. The reviewer seemed to describe the 'warm and fuzzy' feel exemplified by the composers intent.

Smooth Jazz Spot picks winners for Spectra Jazz artists free merchandise.

One of the more popular groups on Facebook.com, the “Smooth Jazz Spot” has created a great sense of community for Smooth Jazz fans with over 14,000 members and growing.

The group utilizes its forum for organizing change for the Smooth Jazz genre, initiating international networking, artist marketing, contests, blogs and event promotion.

Group organizer Ken Levinson tirelessly manages the group (also delegating administrators), and has established rapport with artists and record labels alike for merchandise giveaways to SJS members.

The rules are basic - once SJS members state which drawing they’d like to participate in, they are provided the opportunity to win whatever merchandise is offered by the artist. One of the best kept secrets of central Florida stretching from Tampa Bay to Orlando is the Latin jazz quintet Guisando Caliente, which joins the Spectra Jazz label roster.

During the month of April 2010, Guisando Caliente celebrated 20 years as the hottest Latin jazz group in central Florida commemorated by the production of their CD “Coolantro” distributed by the Spectra Jazz Label.

The group is headed by percussionist and WMNF FM Latin Jazz disc jockey Frankie Pineiro, with band members that include Kenny Drew Jr. (Piano), Jeff Rupert, alternating with Jack Wilkins (Tenor Saxophonists), John Jenkins (Drums), and Mauricio Rodriguez (Bass).

Anyone who knows this ensemble, knows that their performances sizzle with strong Afro-Cuban influences in the spirit of Tito Puente. Guisando Caliente has opened and performed with Latin jazz performers such as Tito Puente, Hilton Ruiz, Dave Valentin and Herbie Mann.

Spectra Jazz welcomes guitarist Najite

The signs of musical evolution are everywhere.
Most evidently in the new smooth sounds that emanate from the Nigerian-born guitarist Kelvin Najite Ikpeni, or simply called “Najite” (pronounced Nah-Jee-Teh).

Najite has created his own brand of smooth sounds to soothe the mind, body and spirit in a CD called “The Genesis of Me”, which demonstrates a combination of Jazz, Gospel and R&B.

The CD includes inspirational melodies accompanied by a warm guitar improvisational style that he calls ‘Neo Life’ (reminiscent of style of singer/guitarist, Jonathan Butler).

Spectra Jazz signs drummer Chris Massey

Not often does a drummer start off a career with high praise and reviews from jazz critics - nor does a drummer provide the sort of recorded listening experience one leaves on continual play, but you’ll have to hear drummer Chris Massey’s New Jazz Project CD “Vibrainium”to believe it!

Maker's,(known as Oklahoma City's place for Jazz)is the venue where it all started for Champian, where she began at age 15.

The Matt Cusson Interview

Singer/songwriter Matt Cusson takes time away from his schedule in the city of Leeds, United Kingdom for a little Q&A session while on break with the "Micheal Jackson - "Man in the Mirror" Tribute tour.

Matt is enjoying performances on the celebrated tour (which is "rumored" to be heading for Broadway in 2011), while being featured singing the vocally-suited Michael Jackson ballad "She's Out of My Life".

His award winning song "One of Those Nights" will be distributed worldwide on the Spectra Jazz Label for Spectra Records™ in September of 2010, so we thought to help fans and newcomers get to know a little more about him.

SJN: I guess we can begin with what’s your full name?
MC: Matthew John Vincent Cusson

SJN: When were you born and where?
MC: Pittsfield, MA,...Do we do dates?

SJN: Where is your current domicile?
MC: The road! or Los Angeles

SJN: What’s your favorite color?
MC: Blue

SJN: Who was the first performer/singer you were drawn to?
MC: Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder

SJN: Why? Any particular reason?
MC: As a kid I obviously didn't listen for the things I listen to now, but I ALWAYS like great songs. It seems at the time they had some of the greatest. Though I went back to before I was born as well with [Michael Jackson's]"Off The Wall" and all of Stevie's 70's albums. I guess what drew me to them at such a young age was the little musician in me.

SJN: How many piano teachers did you have - your mom
claims you first! Who taught you technically?

MC: I actually never had piano lessons. I sat down at the piano around 7 and
just started playing. My mother was a classical teacher, by the book so we
were completely different. I may have taken a lesson here and there with a
couple people, but they didn't go much beyond a few lessons, although a guy
by the name of Rick Campion taught me some stuff when I was about 14.

SJN: What sort of classical music do you like, and do you play any today?
MC: I love classical music. If I play it, it's only by ear...and most likely my interpretation of it, with my usual jazz chords where a triad should probably be. Recently, I've been diving head first into film scores and music composers like Ennio Morricone, John Willimas, Debussy, Mahler,
I love them all!

SJN: What High School did you go to and were you in any bands in
high school, or were you always a virtuoso?

MC: I went to St. Joseph's High School in my hometown of Pittsfield, MA. I went
to a private school then, and there were no music classes or bands or anything
like that. I played a lot of basketball and participated in the plays and
things like that, sang at the school dances and what not. But as my parents
tell me, every single day after school, I would throw my backpack on the
floor, answered a couple questions with words like "fine", "nothing", "good",
all while walking rapidly to my room where I would lock myself in there for
the rest of the night singing, writing, playing, and learning, only allotting
myself a 30 minute dinner with the family where I wouldn't shut up about the
song I just wrote or the new "Take 6" album that just came out.

SJN: How do you practice?
MC: I just play. If I hear something I like from someone, I learn it and apply
it in more ways than one.

SJN: Why do you dig jazz?
MC: To me it's the most expressive form of music, a song is never the same twice, and to hear different interpretations of a song is amazing to me. It's free, creative, it's every emotion there is, it's music! You can say so many things you're usually not able to, beyond
the sky is the limit with jazz.

SJN: Why do you dig R&B?
MC: I love the soul, the rhythms, the heart, the creativity, the voices over
the years that have made me weep. The mood a good R&B song can put me in,
there's nothing like it.

SJN: Choose one: Lyric or Melody?
MC: Can I choose both? It's different for each song for me. (you'll soon
learn that I'm very indecisive!)

SJN: What is your favorite composition or song?
MC: I could never pick one...EVER! I get asked this all the time, such a
tough question. I'll say this, in this moment, while I'm answering
this question sitting in this Leeds hotel room bed with my laptop, "Secret
O' Life" by James Taylor is hitting me, because it's playing on my iTunes
right now...wait!...wait, okay now it's "Obsession" by Dori Caymmi.

SJN: Have you ever studied voice?
MC: I started taking voice lessons when I was 13. I think it's really important
to get the technique of singing in your body and mind.

SJN: Have you studied acting or dance?
MC: I've never studied either, but have acted on occasion, and danced on a tour
here and there, doing a little dancing in the MJ tour I'm in now.

SJN: Who’s your absolute favorite singer?
MC: Ah! These questions!(laughter)...I think I'm going to go with the great Nat King Cole.

SJN: Who taught you guitar? Was that something you picked up at
Berklee College?
MC: I messed around a little bit with guitar at Berklee, but never took it seriously. It wasn't until after Berklee, I started really getting into Brazilian music, and the guy who made me pick it up and learn it was Djavan, one of my favorite musical artists.
I bought several of his DVD's and honestly sat next to the television, paused, rewound, and looked at his fingers over the guitar and learned a bunch of stuff. Before that I could play a couple of songs on it here and there, but watching and learning from him taught me a lot of chords and voicings and that whole Brazilian vibe that I loved.
From there, learning other things on guitar came a little easier.

SJN: In R&B, you mentioned voices that made you weep over
the years. Can you name any?
MC: Definitely, Nat King Cole. Donny Hathaway put so much heart and feeling into every word and every note he sang. I used to go to voice lessons saying "make me sound like him".
Stevie's voice is incredible. Brian McKnight wrote and sang those tunes that you had to tear up over when you heard them e.g. "One Last Cry" and "I Remember You".

SJN: What was your experience at Berklee College of Music like
and why did you choose to study there?
MC: It was either go to college to play basketball or study music. After realizing
the NBA was a long shot, I chose Berklee because of the rich history it has
for music and musicians. I was only there for 3 short semesters, but it was
one of the greatest periods in my life. Being around music 24/7 with friends who live it the same way I do. It helped my learn how to perform, and introduced me to some of my life long musical
friends.

SJN: ...Like whom?
MC: Well to name a couple in particular, my good friend Sam Gruen who co-wrote a couple of tunes on my last album. Johnny Morrow (a terrific bass player) is another guy that I met during my Berklee days and did most of the mixing on my last album.
Livingston Taylor was a teacher there who took me on tour with him a couple of years after I left Berklee. To this day Liv' helps me out with the business side of everything and let's me perform with him whenever we're in the same area.

Berklee also brought me to Brian McKnight. It was in a rehearsal room that he and I met for the first time and obviously work together a lot to this day. I also played with John Mayer a couple of times over there... really just timeless experiences.

SJN: Who all have you sung with?
MC: I'm more than thankful for the opportunity to sing and play with artists like Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, Christina Aguilera, Smokey Robinson, The Roots, James Taylor, BeBe Winans, and Joe to name a few.

SJN: What’s the largest crowd you’ve performed for… alone?
MC: Well not counting television audiences, I played in Taiwan once with Brian [McKnight] in front of a crowd of 22 or 23,000.
As for TV, I was on "The View"once with Livingston Taylor (brother of James Taylor), who knows how many people watch that show!?

SJN: Why do you wear hats?

MC: I've always hid myself, and been more the mysterious one rather than the
outgoing one, I love the mood it gives to the rest of me. Plus it's a stylish
way to hide a bit.

SJN: How many awards do you have, and can you name them all?

MC: I'm not sure. The first award I won was New York's Agape Award for
"Best New Artist". More recently, I won 2nd place in the International
Songwriting Competition to drummer Tain Watts, which was an honor to be 2nd place to him.
And my most proud award moment was winning the "John Lennon Songwriting Contest" for Best Jazz Song, then going on to win the "Maxell - Song of The Year" for 2009.
I also just found out my album was a pick for top 10 albums of 2009 in the
Japanese Magazine BMR.

SJN: Name five highlights in your career so far (in no particular order)

MC: 5. Winning the "Maxell Song of the Year" for "One Of Those Nights".
4. Touring the world with Brian McKnight, opening and playing keys and
singing background for him. 3. Playing keys for Stevie Wonder.
2. Singing my song "Heaven" with the greatest hip hop band ever, "The
Roots". 1. Being musical guest with Livingston Taylor on ABC's, "The View".
And, Signing with Spectra Records to release "One Of Those Nights"

SJN: You once said the song "One Of Those Nights" scared you
to death because it was straight-ahead jazz. Why did it scare you?

MC: I guess it's kind of the reason John Mayer always thought "Daughters" would be terrible for a single. (laughter). "One Of Those Nights" was such a personal song. I held nothing back musically, and went there with the changing of the tempos and chord substitutions and all that mess. It never struck me as a song I'd hear on the radio, but hopefully the "B"-side song that was a little obscure and that everyone loved. When it won the Maxell "Song of the Year", I teared up thinking of all the crap I went through that lead me to the finishing of that song.
It was truly one of the most amazing moments in my career thus far.

SJN: You spent a great deal of time touring with Brian McKnight,
what did you learn from him?

MC: Brian was definitely an amazing mentor to me. Even before I met him,
I listened to his first couple of albums and was just blown away.
I was only about 10 years old when I first heard them, and I right away
started learning songs like "Never Felt This Way" and "One Last Cry" on the piano.
Then playing and writing with him, I learned by just watching and listening.
He taught me a LOT on the piano and vocally. I learned some studio secrets
and arrangement tips. Every show I played with him was a lesson.
The time I spent with him was priceless and I wouldn't trade those
experiences for the world.

SJN: How's the [Michael Jackson Tribute] tour going for you?

MC: Really amazing!!! Michael Jackson was such an amazing part of my musical life that to be able to travel the entire world and represent his music, and interpret it in my way is really special. The crowds are still those amazing 'MJ' crowds, coming in with all the gloves and hats and doing all the choreography, tearing up during "Man In The Mirror". It's really incredible to experience only what is 1/1,000,000th of what he did. Plus it's always great to make new fans, sing and play in places that I've never been before --the tour is really a blessing!

SJN: If you weren’t performing music, what would you do?
MC: Working my tail off to be the point guard for the Boston Celtics!!!

SJN: Name 5 favorite Motion Pictures?
MC: "Dumb and Dumber", "Napoleon Dynamite", "A Muppet Family Christmas",
"The Legend of 1900" and "Departed".

SJN: Name 5 favorite albums?
MC: "Voodoo" (D'angelo), "Birth of Cool" (Miles Davis), "Seduzir" (Djavan),
"Sleeping Gypsy" (Michael Franks) and "Innervisions" (Stevie Wonder).

SJN: What’s a pet peeve of yours?
MC: People that don't use their directional light!!

SJN: And lastly, where do you see yourself in 10 years?

MC: Such a tough question! If you asked me where do I see myself next
week, I'm not even sure of the answer. I've always without doubt wanted
the big family, house on the beach in Maine with another wherever I needed it.
Musically that's completely up to God.

If I had to choose I'd say known as this generations Quincy Jones and Stevie
Wonder/Harry Connick Jr./Miles Davis, (laughter), that's a feat that
could be a little tough, but why shoot for anything less. I guess in 10 years
I want to be comfortable with myself and with my music. To be able to
sit back and know that I have so much to do and learn, but say I did
pretty good so far.

Spectra Jazz signs John Lennon Contest/”Maxell Songwriter of the Year” Matt Cusson

When the Spectra Records™ Jazz division began, it was a no brainer that the John Lennon songwriting contest and “Maxell Song of the Year” winner Matt Cusson would be sought after for his composition “One Of Those Nights”, winning best song in the jazz category.

Matt Cusson, the talented singer/pianist and songwriter from Massachusetts, has toured and worked with performers such as Jessica Simpson, James and Livingston Taylor, Bebe Winans, Babyface, Brian McKnight and many others.

Though his style is diversified, he has a hidden panache for jazz, obviously displaying those traits to wow judges such as Jesse Harris (Diana Krall’s “Don’t Know Why”), Bob Weir (Grateful Dead founding member) and superstar songwriter Lamont Dozier for the John Lennon Songwriting Contest awarded in 2008.

As in true fairytale fashion, during a 2009 Brian McKnight concert in Dallas, Matt was surprised with the $20,000 “Maxell Song of the Year” award by the John Lennon Songwriting contest executive director, Brian Rothschild and Maxell President, Masuru Kamemoto. The rest (as they say) is history. He currently is on the international “Man in the Mirror” tour paying tribute to the late Michael Jackson.

You, me and Dupree... the recipe for an introspective, groove-injected sonic experience. The new TIME AND TIDE is an amalgamation of intoxicating, funky-retro grooves, sophisticated lyrics and rich vocals from hitmaker Robbie Dupree. You remember the 1980 smash "Steal Away" and the Top 10 follow up, "Hot Rod Hearts"? Since those days, he's been quite busy writing, producing and performing, with some 9 recordings to his credit over the past 25 years and a loyal, global audience.

TIME AND TIDE is the artist's first foray into Smooth Jazz, a genre he feels is simpatico with his adult brand of music... we fully agree! The Woodstock, NY resident has created a collection of songs here for 2010 that reflects a jazz sensibility with a pop agenda. Spectra releases Meeco's "Perfume e caricias" in U.S.

Meeco, the German-born citizen of Paris is a jazz producer and composer, who creates exotic textures bridging a taste of the Parisian mood with Brazilian lyrics. Meeco collaborates with Jazz legends James Moody, Eddie Henderson, Kenny Barron, Vincent Herring, Buster Williams and Brazilian singer/songwriter Eloisia from the famous French group “Nouvelle Vague” on this his second CD “Perfume e Caricias - (Perfume and Caresses)”. It is bathed in impressionistic accompaniment to the soothing voice and Portuguese lyrics (w/English translation) of Brazilian singer Eloisia.

Saxophonist Butch Thomas signs with Spectra Jazz

Nu-Jazz soprano and tenor saxophonist Butch Thomas, known as the lead saxophonist for “Sting” has signed to the Spectra Jazz division.

The 30-year veteran performer who has toured and recorded with the late Jaco Pastorius, Thomas Dolby, Lenny Kravitz, rock group Living Colour, singer/songwriter Sting, and also filmed episodes on FOX Television’s popular detective series “New York Undercover” (appearing on the show as a regular in “Natalie’s” nightclub segments) will release an EP worldwide entitled “Caribbean Woman” on July 13, 2010.

Selections include: The Wings of Time, You Dig?, Caribbean Woman, Ooga Booga, and All That You Do, all written and produced by Thomas.

Musical personnel on the “Caribbean Woman” project (in addition to Butch Thomas) are drummers, Erik Stams and David Gwynne; guitarists, Henry Defoe and Derek Sivers; and bass player, Jason Rogers.

Mr. Thomas claimed residence in the United Kingdom after completing touring with Sting, and then returned to the United States in 2008 where he performed in such venues as “The Venue” in Clearwater, Florida and both the “Iridium Jazz Club” and the “Blue Note” in New York.

There he was music director for various Jaco Pastorius tributes ("Jacofests") along with benefits for Sting’s Rainforest Foundation. His ensembles for these events included noted musicians such as, Kenwood Dennard, Alex Foster, Lou Soloff, Lou Marini, singer Corey Glover and many others.
